Castaic man pleads not guilty in pet slayings

A Castaic man accused of spearing his pet dog and cat is back in jail and has pleaded not guilty to a charge of animal cruelty.

Jared Andrew Foster, 23, appeared in San Fernando Superior Court Monday and entered a plea of not guilty, said Shiara Dávila-Morales. spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

A preliminary hearing was set for next month.

Foster was arrested June 19 after deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to reports that a man in Castaic had killed his pets in the 32700 block of North Ridge Top Lane.

Foster allegedly made a spear out of a broom handle with a knife fastened to it, then killed his dog — a Chihuahua mix — and cat, according to sheriff’s deputies.

Shortly after deputies arrived at the house they found a dead dog in the backyard that had been set on fire. Inside the house they found the body of a cat that had been killed with a sharp object.

Foster was led away from the house in handcuffs and held on $ 20,000 bail.

Four days after his arrest, the West Ranch High School graduate posted bail with a promise to appear in court Sept. 18.

When he failed to appear in court on that day, he was detained on a bench warrant. He remains in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility with bail now set at $ 60,000.
