2 murder cases put over to next year’s court docket

SANTA CLARITA – Two local unrelated murder cases were heard in court Thursday; each one was postponed and scheduled to be heard later, according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Bradford Elliot Pate, 38, of Burbank is charged with two counts of murder in the wrong-way crash that killed two people last June.

The Rev. Manard Giles, 77, of Quartz Hill was killed in the crash. A passenger in his car, Mattie Lee Ferguson, 60, of Lancaster, died of her injuries a day later.

On Thursday, Pate appeared in San Fernando Superior Court and was told to return to court Dec. 18 to set a date for his preliminary hearing, the spokeswoman said Thursday.

In a second unrelated case, Scott Russell Shipley, 56, of Acton, charged with murder in the death of 39-year-old Christopher Lawrence Demyen, appeared Thursday in Antelope Valley Superior Court for a pretrial hearing.

His case was postponed until Jan. 27, 2014, the District Attorney spokeswoman said.

The two men were fighting over the location where a water truck was parked when the shooting occurred May 15, Deputy District Attorney Tom Trainor said in August.
