More rabid bats turn up in the Santa Clarita Valley

Two more rabid bats were discovered in the Santa Clarita Valley in October, bringing the local year-to-date total to 14 in what is now the third straight year of above-average rabid bat discoveries, according to county officials.

The 13th rabid bat was seen hanging from the eves of a Santa Clarita home and later seen lying on the ground, according to a report from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The 14th was found alive inside a Newhall home, according to county officials.

The Santa Clarita Valley continues to be the hotbed for rabid bat activity in Los Angeles County, with 14 confirmed discoveries accounting for almost half of the 33 bats that have been found countywide as of Wednesday.

The two local bats were the only ones reported in October, according to county records. No bats were reported in September, though six were reported in the Santa Clarita Valley in August.

Rabid bats have been found in most areas of the valley, with confirmed findings in Canyon Country, Newhall, Santa Clarita, Saugus, Stevenson Ranch and Valencia, according to the county Department of Public Health.

The recent findings pad the total of what is now the third straight year of above-average rabid bat activity. In a typical year, officials estimate they will find eight to 10 rabid bats in the entire county.

But last year county officials discovered 56, the largest number since rabies testing on bats began in the early 1960s, including 17 that were found in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The year before there were 38 reports of rabid bats, including 15 locally, according to county records.

It is unknown why the last few years have seen such an increase, officials say, though the high number of local discoveries may be because of the Santa Clara River, which provides a source of water and bridges for bats to roost under.
The wavy, Spanish-style tile roofs on many local homes are also popular with the flying mammals as roosting places.
