CIF tennis playoffs: Hart gets boost from doubles
The Hart Indians girls tennis team continued its dominant run through the 2013 season with a 14-4 win over Chadwick in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs on Wednesday at Hart.
While Hart has been lights out all year, Wednesday’s key to success was improved play in doubles.
“Our doubles played really well today. For a player like me the wind was hard to deal with, but I looked over at our doubles and they were hitting like it was practice and not a big deal at all,” said Hart senior singles player Jackie Resler.
Leading the way for Hart (18-0) was the veteran tandem of Lauren Dam and Bailey Sindle, who swept and lost only four games in the process.
The two were helped by teammates Carissa Costanzo and Madison Ladanyi, who captured a set 7-5 before Ladanyi was subbed out due to a minor injury.
Injuries proved to be a nuisance for the Indians on Wednesday, as Foothill League singles champion Proyfon Lohaphaisan also sat out her third set due to a minor shake-up.
The good news is that both are expected to return for Friday’s second-round contest.
The other good news is that on Wednesday those injuries mattered little in altering the outcome of the match.
The Indians jumped out to a 6-0 lead quickly and didn’t look back from there.
Rounding out doubles action were Sheridan Mott and Cassie Wilkinson, who captured a set 6-1.
Hart’s dominant singles lineup was exactly that, as sophomore Natalia Munoz and senior Jackie Resler each swept.
Lohaphaisan, the reigning Foothill League singles champion, won two sets 6-3, 6-0 before sitting out her scheduled third set due to a tweaked hip.
Hart faces the winner of Ayala and Villa Park next.
The Indians are the No. 4 overall seed and will likely be favored in every match they play before the semifinals round. But Hart head coach Chris Mansfield knows that when playoffs begin, many unlikely scenarios can play out.
“I don’t know what to tell you, you can never really tell what’s going to happen,” Mansfield said. “Two years ago a wild card team knocked out two highly seeded teams, so it’s difficult to know what to expect.”
