Mark your calendar to help light up Main Street
The holidays are right around the corner, and nothing welcomes the spirit of the season like bright holiday lights and a 23-foot-tall Christmas tree. Back in 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the tradition of lighting the national Christmas tree by inviting citizens to an evening filled with lights and music grounded in a message of hope and peace. Ninety years later, just outside the White House and in communities across the country, the Christmas tree-lighting tradition continues as Americans usher in the holidays. This year, I hope you will join me and the Santa Clarita City Council, business owners in Old Town Newhall, the Santa Clarita Valley Automobile Dealers Association, and Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 9, as we light our own community Christmas tree and light up Main Street in celebration of the holiday season. Santa Clarita’s tree-lighting ceremony, which is being called “Light Up Main Street,” will take place at 6 p.m. Nov. 9 on Main Street between Lyons Avenue and 9th Street. At that time, we will welcome residents to Santa Clarita’s own winter wonderland as we illuminate a 23-foot Christmas tree in front of the Old Town Newhall Library and turn on thousands of lights along Main Street. The evening will include festival holiday music and family-friendly activities and will serve as a fantastic kick-off to the 2013 holiday season. For years Santa Clarita has decked the street with twinkling lights for the holiday season, but this is the first year the city has worked with a holiday décor company to create a more extensive light and décor display. The Santa Clarita Valley Automobile Dealers Association and Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital are sponsors of the décor program. Old Town Newhall Block Party Kicks Off Holiday Season Prior to the “Light Up Main Street” event, businesses in Old Town Newhall will host a block party from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is a great opportunity to get a head start on shopping and enjoy the festive environment on and around Main Street. The event will include free transportation on the holiday-themed Trolley, which will offer convenient on/off stops in Old Town Newhall. The Old Town Newhall Block Party is being organized and supported by several business owners, including representatives from The Boutique, Fresh, Ma Maison, Luscious Soul, Tribute Beauty Lounge, Results Fitness, Mirror Mirror, Fleur Wellness Spa, W.O.L.V.E.S. Surf Shop and the Spice in Life. Most businesses will be serving refreshments and offering special promotions on Nov. 9, and there will be a passbook customers can complete to win free gifts. In addition, there will be activities scheduled at the Old Town Newhall Library for the kids, cooking classes and demonstrations, specialty fitness trainings, a fashion show, a taco bar on Main Street between Market and 6th, tours of the Hart Mansion and much more. Former President Calvin Coolidge said: “Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” We have much to be thankful for and to celebrate here in Santa Clarita, and the holidays are a wonderful time to take inventory of all we have accomplished and all that we cherish. Please join me on Main Street Nov. 9 to enjoy all that is merry and bright about our city not only this holiday season, but every day of the year.
