Foothill v-ball roundup: Hart shakes up league
Hart girls volleyball was getting tired of coming close.
So the Hart Indians decided to do something about it on Thursday at Hart High.
How about a 3-2 win over the Valencia Vikings, who came into the day undefeated in league play.
The game scores went 20-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-18, 16-14 in favor of Hart, which lost to Valencia 3-2 earlier this season.
“We needed to redeem ourselves from last time because we kind of tanked game five (against Valencia) and we were coming off such a bad week after losing to West Ranch and Saugus,” said Hart head coach Mary Keen.
This time, Hart (14-11 overall, 5-4 Foothill League) prevailed in a tight game five and the Indians earned just their second win over Valencia in the last seven years.
The Vikings (17-9, 8-1) missed out on a chance to wrap up at least a share of their 11th league title in 12 years.
Now, they’ll have to beat West Ranch in Tuesday’s league finale to do so.
Hart won the match with a well-distributed offensive game plan. Corrine Holloway and Claire Cansler each knocked down 10 kills and five total Hart players had at least five kills
Erin Indermill led the Indians with 28 assists and Shelly Peer held it down on the defensive end.
Keen said Hart’s key was its aggressiveness down the stretch.
“They knew if they were going to go out they were going to go out hard,” Keen said.
Valencia’s Lindsey Knudsen finished with a match-high 18 kills while adding 24 digs and Hayley Alvarez had 41 assists.
Hart caps its regular season against Canyon on Tuesday.
West Ranch 3, Golden Valley 0
West Ranch was dealt a big favor with Hart beating Valencia.
That result, along with West Ranch’s sweep (25-10, 25-11, 25-4) of Golden Valley on Thursday puts the Wildcats in a tie for first place with a chance to win its first league title in program history if it can beat Valencia on Tuesday.
“Here’s a chance for West Ranch to do something it hasn’t done before and there’s some excitement with that,” said West Ranch head coach Gerrit Maxwell.
Brooke Garelick and Alexis Clewis each had eight kills for West Ranch (11-4, 8-1) while Lindsay Kunz had 15 assists and seven aces.
For Golden Valley (1-13, 0-9), Mariah Matteson recorded 11 digs.
Saugus 3, Canyon 0
Saugus senior Montana Shephard had nine kills on senior night to help lead her team to a win by scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-14 on Tuesday.
Amy Buffham added seven kills and 13 assists for Saugus (15-14, 5-4), which finishes league play against Golden Valley on Tuesday.
Canyon fell to 3-19, 2-7.
