Foothill v-ball roundup: Hart shakes up league - Santa Clarita, CA - Sports

Foothill v-ball roundup: Hart shakes up league

Hayden Harker (23), left, jumps for joy as she and her Hart High teammates celebrate after winning against Valencia at Hart on Thursday.

Hart girls volleyball was getting tired of coming close.

So the Hart Indians decided to do something about it on Thursday at Hart High.

How about a 3-2 win over the Valencia Vikings, who came into the day undefeated in league play.

The game scores went 20-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-18, 16-14 in favor of Hart, which lost to Valencia 3-2 earlier this season.

“We needed to redeem ourselves from last time because we kind of tanked game five (against Valencia) and we were coming off such a bad week after losing to West Ranch and Saugus,” said Hart head coach Mary Keen.

This time, Hart (14-11 overall, 5-4 Foothill League) prevailed in a tight game five and the Indians earned just their second win over Valencia in the last seven years.

The Vikings (17-9, 8-1) missed out on a chance to wrap up at least a share of their 11th league title in 12 years.

Now, they’ll have to beat West Ranch in Tuesday’s league finale to do so.

Hart won the match with a well-distributed offensive game plan. Corrine Holloway and Claire Cansler each knocked down 10 kills and five total Hart players had at least five kills

Erin Indermill led the Indians with 28 assists and Shelly Peer held it down on the defensive end.

Keen said Hart’s key was its aggressiveness down the stretch.

“They knew if they were going to go out they were going to go out hard,” Keen said.

Valencia’s Lindsey Knudsen finished with a match-high 18 kills while adding 24 digs and Hayley Alvarez had 41 assists.

Hart caps its regular season against Canyon on Tuesday.

West Ranch 3, Golden Valley 0

West Ranch was dealt a big favor with Hart beating Valencia.

That result, along with West Ranch’s sweep (25-10, 25-11, 25-4) of Golden Valley on Thursday puts the Wildcats in a tie for first place with a chance to win its first league title in program history if it can beat Valencia on Tuesday.

“Here’s a chance for West Ranch to do something it hasn’t done before and there’s some excitement with that,” said West Ranch head coach Gerrit Maxwell.

Brooke Garelick and Alexis Clewis each had eight kills for West Ranch (11-4, 8-1) while Lindsay Kunz had 15 assists and seven aces.

For Golden Valley (1-13, 0-9), Mariah Matteson recorded 11 digs.

Saugus 3, Canyon 0

Saugus senior Montana Shephard had nine kills on senior night to help lead her team to a win by scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-14 on Tuesday.

Amy Buffham added seven kills and 13 assists for Saugus (15-14, 5-4), which finishes league play against Golden Valley on Tuesday.

Canyon fell to 3-19, 2-7.

Proyfon Lohaphaisan wins Foothill singles title - Santa Clarita, CA - Sports

Proyfon Lohaphaisan wins Foothill singles title

Hart’s Proyfon Lohaphaisan competes during the Foothill League singles tournament at The Paseo Club on Thursday. Photo by Dan Watson/The Signal

It didn’t take long for Halloween surprises on Thursday at the Paseo Club, and Canyon sophomore Katrina DeGuzman was to thank for that.

After entering Thursday’s semifinal matchup against Hart’s Natalia Munoz winless in the two’s past three matches, DeGuzman downed the No.1 overall seed and evened the score on the second day of action at the Foothill League tournament.

“I can’t even believe it really” said DeGuzman following the 6-1, 7-5 victory. “It felt like she was holding back a little so I tried to attack.”

Unfortunately for DeGuzman that approach fell flat in Thursday’s final against Hart’s Proyfon Lohaphaisan, who strolled into the finals fresh off of a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hart teammate Jackie Resler in the day’s other singles semifinal.

DeGuzman was unable to sustain the level of shot making that she had displayed in the semifinals, and Lohaphaisan took advantage to capture the tournament first place trophy with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

The win makes Lohaphaisan the first Hart player to win the year-end tournament since Anne Susdorf did it in 2010. Additionally, the Indians junior finishes 2013 Foothill League action with a perfect 34-0 record in league sets.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Lohaphaisan, who along with DeGuzman advances to CIF Individuals next week. “I guess it’s the result of having more experience with USTA matches, and my backhand is probably improved.”

Munoz defeated Resler 6-1, 6-3 in the third-place match, and will serve as an alternate for CIF individuals.

In doubles, the day belonged to Valencia.

In a tournament that was filled unpredictability, the Vikings duo of Tina Inchalik and Remy Balmain were as steady as they come. After moving through to Thursday’s semifinal virtually untested, Inchalik and Balmain made quick work of West Ranch’s Quinterra Walter-Eze and Julia Lynch 6-3, 6-1 once they got there.

Awaiting them in the finals was Hart’s tandem of Lauren Dam and Bailey Sindle, who had to fight through Valencia’s Katelyn Choi and Kate Zeile in a three-set battle in order to clinch the second spot in CIF individuals.

Once the final began, however, it was clear that Dam and Sindle were not about to beat a Valencia doubles team twice in one day.

Inchalik and Balmain were too consistent for their counterparts, and captured the first place trophy with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

“We won here but it’s not because it was easy, we just played really well,” said Inchalik, who is a junior. “Because of playing doubles last year the transition wasn’t too bad for us, and we were able to come out here and do the right things.”

Wildcats Walter-Eze and Lynch will be the alternates for CIF Individuals, as the two emerged the victor in a tightly contested tie breaker against Choi and Zeile in the third place match.

The draw for CIF individual and team competition is released next week.

Bridge Construction to Begin in Valencia Over El Paseo Drive

Bridge Construction to Begin in Valencia Over El Paseo Drive

The City of Santa Clarita will install a new steel truss bridge to replace an older structure over El Paseo Drive between Alberto Court and Baleria Court starting Monday, November 4.  The pedestrian bridge is expected to be closed for about 10 weeks and anticipated to open January 2014.

Construction hours will be Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., excluding holidays.  Residents should expect periodic construction noise and lane closures during construction, and are advised to take alternate routes around Alberto Court and Baleria Court.

The construction project is part of the City’s efforts to upgrade the paseo infrastructure to maintain the area’s high quality bridges and trails.  Nearby residents were provided with construction notices with details of the project and contact information.  Signage will be posted along the paseos and at the bridge approaches.

For more information about the construction of the new paseo bridge, contact Engineering Consultant Monica Heredia at (661) 255-4332.

James Shields staying with Royals - Sports - Santa Clarita, CA

James Shields staying with Royals

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher and Hart High James Shields will remain with the Royals for another year.

NEW YORK (AP) — With the World Series over, baseball’s business season began Thursday as the Kansas City Royals exercised their option on pitcher and Hart graduate James Shields.

There were 147 players who became free agents. An additional 30 players are eligible to go free in coming days if their 2014 options aren’t exercised. Among that group is Yankees captain Derek Jeter, who has a $ 9.5 million player option.

Teams then have until Monday to make $ 14.1 million qualifying offers to eligible free agents who were on their rosters when the season began. If a player accepts, he is signed for 2014; if he declines and signs elsewhere, his former team gets amateur draft pick compensation for next June’s draft.

Shields ($ 13.5 million) and Chicago White Sox reliever Matt Lindstrom ($ 4 million) had their options exercised Thursday, preventing them from becoming free agents.

Acquired last offseason from Tampa Bay, Shields, 31, went 13-9 with a 3.15 ERA and an AL-leading 228 2/3 innings in his eighth season.

“I feel good about it. I feel like I pitched well for them last year,” Shields said. “I’m just excited to be back and be a Royal and have a good season next year.”

Among the players whose options were declined were Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook ($ 1 million buyout instead of $ 9.5 million salary); Texas first baseman-designated hitter Lance Berkman ($ 1 million instead of $ 12 million); Dodgers left-hander Chris Capuano ($ 1 million instead of $ 8 million) and second baseman Mark Ellis ($ 1 million instead of $ 5.25 million); and Colorado reliever Rafael Betancourt ($ 250,000 instead of $ 4.25 million).

Cleveland’s Jason Giambi went free, then agreed to a minor league contract with the Indians.

Perez, a two-time All-Star, would have been eligible for salary arbitration.

He spent five seasons with the Indians and while he saved 124 games, Perez often was at the center of turmoil that overshadowed his pitching. He angered Indians fans last season for saying they didn’t support the team like they should, and he rankled Cleveland’s front office by criticizing trades and stating the Indians weren’t spending enough to win.

“We just finished out team meetings and made the determination that Chris was not a fit on our roster,” general manager Chris Antonetti said in announcing Perez’s release.

In June, Perez was arrested after drug agents followed a package containing marijuana to his home in Rocky River, Ohio. He and his wife pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge.

20-year-old gets six months in drunken skateboard incident - Santa Clarita, CA

20-year-old gets six months in drunken skateboard incident

SANTA CLARITA – A 20-year-old Valencia man was sentenced to more than six months in jail Thursday for driving his car drunk while towing a friend on a skateboard — and then crashing.

During an appearance at Santa Clarita Courthouse on Wednesday, Dallas Taylor Hattox pleaded no contest to one count of driving while having .08 percent or higher blood alcohol, District Attorney’s spokeswoman Jane Robison said.

He was sentenced to 200 days in county jail and ordered to surrender Nov. 25, Robison said. A restitution hearing in the case was scheduled that same day.

Hattox was arrested April 29 and originally charged with impaired driving causing injury.

On the night of the crash, both young men had been drinking in their residential area near Rio Norte Junior High School, officials said.

Hattox let his friend “hang on to the tailgate of his vehicle while riding a skateboard,” California Highway Patrol Sgt. John Lutz said in April.

The car Hattox was driving was southbound on Las Canastas Drive when it hit a concrete curb and a concrete wall on the south edge of La Montura Street. Bystander Dakota Miller was injured.

Miller was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital suffering “moderate to major” injuries.

A vehicle burglary occurred at the 25900 block of Tournament Drive between the hours of 10:30 pm and 6:00 am. The vehicle was parked on the street in front of the residence. Take personal belongings with you when you exit your vehicle or secure items in locked trunks. Remember to roll up all windows and lock doors before exiting your vehicles. If possible, park in well-lit areas. If you see any suspicious activity or vehicles in your neighborhood, please call the Sheriff’s Station immediately at 661-255-1121.

There were five arrests made this past week by proactive Santa Clarita Deputies assigned to the Valencia area. Arrests included arson and numerous shoplifting from local businesses.

Flash mob surprises Sierra Vista students - Santa Clarita, CA

Flash mob surprises Sierra Vista students

SANTA CLARITA – A group of 35 teachers — all dressed as zombies — burst from among Sierra Vista Junior High School students and launched into a much-rehearsed flash mob dance Thursday in the middle of the school quad.

Students at the Canyon Country school reacted with surprise and delight at their teachers’ Halloween zombie gyrations to megahits like “Backstreet’s Back” by the Backstreet Boys and “Thriller” by Michael Jackson.

English teacher Robert Isquierdo organized the event and was ecstatic that the students were surprised and the dance went well.

“This is what I live for, right here,” Isquierdo said. “The kids are happy. The teachers are happy.”

Isquierdo’s hope was that the mob dance would bring a “sense of community” and raise school pride among students, faculty and parents.

“It’s a huge success,” seventh-grade teacher Lacy Bregger said. “It’s a neat thing for the kids to see the teachers have fun and dress up.”

Seventh-grader Monique Chamberlain agreed. “It looked like so much fun,” she said.

The event is becoming something of an October tradition at Sierra Vista. Last school year around this time Isquierdo organized a flash mob dance to raise awareness for breast cancer. He hopes to continue it and organize another one in the future.

“When they see teachers making fun of themselves,” he said of the students, “all of a sudden they feel so much more comfortable.”
