LA County supervisors shelve M inmate plan
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County supervisors have put on hold a $ 75 million plan to send inmates to a facility in Kern County that is involved in ongoing litigation with the state’s Department of Corrections. Supervisors voted Tuesday to shelve the project that would ship about 500 inmates serving lengthy sentences to a jail run by the city of Taft. The plan was considered a cost-effective approach to free up local jail beds and increases the amount of time served by the most serious offends. The board has previously approved the five-year plan, but Supervisor Gloria Molina changed her mind after learning about pending litigation. The Los Angeles Times reports Taft sued the corrections department, saying it should reimburse the city for unemployment benefits to former employees after the facility closed in 2011.
