Crews didn’t know CA care facility was closed
SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say they responded to four 911 calls at a California assisted care facility where they say 14 patients were left practically abandoned before discovering that it was closed. Alameda County officials said Wednesday that county fire crews responded to the Valley Springs Manor care center in Castro Valley four times before finding out from a worker on Saturday that it had been ordered shuttered by the state earlier in the week. That’s when sheriff’s deputies were called in and the remaining patients were transported away. Sheriff’s Sgt. J.D. Nelson said only a cook and a janitor were caring for patients. Attorney Orrin Grover has said patients were being cared for as the facility’s owners were making arrangements to transfer them to other sites. The case is under investigation.
