Bicyclist killed in SCV collision

SANTA CLARITA – A young man was killed today after being hit by a Los Angeles County work truck at Magic Mountain Parkway and Railroad Avenue while riding his bicycle through the intersection.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, a bicyclist who investigators believe is either an older teen or young adult was riding a child’s bike northbound on Railroad when he was hit, said Sgt. Rich Cohen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s Traffic Division.

Witnesses said the bicyclist was riding against a red light, Cohen said.

“It appears from witness statements that the bicyclist was heading northbound on Railroad Avenue and went against a red light when he was struck by a vehicle which belongs to the L.A. County Sanitation District and that vehicle was making a left turn on Railroad,” Cohen said.

“It appear that his vision was blurred by the sun, but he probably wasn’t looking in this direction being that the bicyclist was on the wrong side of the roadway,” he said.

The driver of the Sanitation District vehicle, who was not hurt, was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital as part of routine sheriff’s procedure. He was expected to undergo tests.

The victim had a wallet but no identification, Cohen said.

The Los Angeles County Department of Coroner was called to the scene.
