Moral victories aren’t going to help The Master’s College women’s soccer team get into the NAIA National Tournament.
The TMC Mustangs, ranked 15th in the NAIA, lost yet another close game to another nationally ranked opponent on Tuesday.
The 11th-ranked Concordia University Eagles delivered a blow to TMC’s National Tournament chances with a 2-1 win over the Mustangs at Reese Field.
Carly Mattram scored with five minutes to play for Concordia (13-0-3 overall, 8-0-1 Golden State Athletic Conference) to break a 1-1 tie and seal it.
“We didn’t put our chances away in the first half and it came back to bite us,” said TMC head coach Curtis Lewis.
It isn’t the first narrow loss for the Mustangs (13-4, 5-4), who fell 1-0 in double overtime to then-No. 6 Vanguard and 3-2 in overtime to then-No. 3 Westmont.
“We’re losing to teams that are fantastic teams,” Lewis said. “The issue is if we want to get where we need to go, you can’t keep beating the teams you’re supposed to beat and losing to the really good teams.”
TMC once again came close to notching a signature win on Tuesday when Jessica Long rocketed a right-footed shot from 18 yards out into Concordia’s goal to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
But less than 20 seconds later, at the 15:21 mark of the first half, the Eagles answered with a Megan Daniels goal to tie it up.
Concordia outshot TMC 16-12, but Mustangs goalkeeper Ilyssa Espiritu made 11 saves and held strong for most of the way.
On Saturday, TMC plays its final regular season game against Biola before heading into the GSAC Tournament beginning next week.
The Mustangs have already secured a fourth-place finish in conference, and will therefore face the No. 5 seed in the first round of the tournament.
