TMC soccer suffers hurt and defeat
In a way, The Master’s College’s 2-1 loss to Concordia on Wednesday at Reese Field was a reflection of the team’s season.
Short-handed, battered, in a hole, but still showing character.
“It’s been a difficult season and part of the reason is I feel like we’re better than we’re showing. better than our record,” said TMC head coach Jim Rickard. “We’ve been playing good soccer, but I came to the realization, it hit me, we can’t keep saying that.”
The Mustangs (4-10-1 overall, 3-6 Golden State Athletic Conference) had three players out with various injuries, starter Zach Klindworth leave the game then return late after an ankle injury and another starter, Joey Mikulas, playing extremely banged up.
TMC trailed 2-0 after Concordia goals in the 15th minute by Isaac Gettis and in the 32nd minute by Neil Anaya.
But Klindworth returned after the first-half ankle injury and assisted on a goal in the 48th minute by Kevin Scheunemann to cut the Eagles’ lead to 2-1.
It’s the second time this season TMC trailed the No. 16 NAIA team by two or more goals this year and made a comeback attempt.
The Mustangs trailed Concordia 3-0 on Oct. 8 before eventually falling short 3-2.
They nearly tied the Eagles (11-4, 8-1) on Wednesday when Scheunemann bent a shot from the corner of the 18-yard box that goalkeeper Jordan Brinkley didn’t have a chance at stopping.
Yet it was the crossbar that proved to be the stopper.
The Mustangs wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 3 p.m., hosting No. 22 Biola.
They will then turn their attention to the GSAC Tournament, which begins Nov. 6.
TMC will likely be the No. 6 seed in the tournament.
Depth will be an issue with a flood of TMC injuries, but if they pull a major upset, they are guaranteed a spot in the NAIA Tournament with a GSAC tourney victory.
