Camp Scott Students Unveiled The Mural They Created

The mural, titled “Planting the Seeds of Knowledge and Inspiration,” is part of a series of literacy-themed mural projects throughout Los Angeles County juvenile detention centers that aim to provide a positive arts experience for youth to express themselves creatively and constructively, officials said.

“These kind collaborations between LACOE and the Probation department give the girls the opportunity to find belief in themselves and feel special,” said Charlie Phelps, a math teacher at the Road to Success Academy.

The murals are the result of a partnership between the LA County Office of Education, the Probation Department and the nonprofit group Theatre of Hearts/Youth First. Over the course of two weeks, 16 girls at Camp Scott designed and painted the mural under the guidance of a mentor artist.

The mural features positive themes such as motivation, hope, determination and achievement.

Over the last two weeks, Camp Scott students created a mural from beginning to end.

The 10 foot by 50 foot mural covers one exterior wall of the library at the Road to Success Academy, the fully accredited school operated by the LA County Office of Education for young women detained at Camp Scott. It is the fourth artwork of its kind at the school.

The Road to Success Academy is a one-of-a-kind school that engages in thematic, disciplinary and project based learning, Phelps said.

Through school’s activities, the young women at Camp Scott are able to reflect socially and emotionally on themselves.

“The mural gives them something they can be proud of and have ownership of, to empower them through the success of such a project,” Phelps said. “Hopefully, in the future, they can continue being successful.”

The unveiling featured a poetry reading and performances by students and was attended by 60 people including representatives from county Supervisor Michael Antonovich’s office, the Probation department and the LACOE, among others.
