Light the Night Walk raises money for cancer research
SANTA CLARITA – Hundreds of walkers turned out this weekend to raise more than $ 170,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during the annual Light the Night Walk in Valencia. This year’s walk was held Saturday evening at Bridgeport Park and attracted a crowd of about 1,200 who turned out to support research to find a cure for blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, according to Nichole Guzman, a campaign director for the Light the Night Walk program. “Our actual turnout Saturday was higher than it’s ever been,” she said Tuesday. While the final amount is still being calculated, Guzman estimated Saturday’s fundraising total would reach $ 179,000 when all is said and done. Participants were able to raise money as individuals, in teams with family and friends, or as corporate teams. One of those family-and-friends teams was the “Hodgkin’s Haters,” a team made up, in part, by Canyon Country resident Sandra Schneider and her husband, Brian, who was previously diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma but is now cancer-free. “Everybody does their own part, and while not everybody forms a team or anything like that, everybody wants to find a cure,” she said. This year’s event was also the first in which a portion of Newhall Ranch Road was closed down to accommodate walkers, according to Guzman. “It was a really great event,” she said. “It was kind of the re-launch of what we’re hoping it will be like for years to come.” Lmoney@signalscv.com
