Saugus deputy gets probation in prisoner beating
SANTA CLARITA – A Saugus man who works as a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has been placed on three years probation and ordered to get counseling after pleading no contest to assaulting a 19-year-old inmate, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said. Matthew John Funicello, 31, who lives near Bouquet Canyon Park, appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court Monday where he entered a plea of no contest to one misdemeanor count of assault by a public officer. Funicello was arrested on suspicion he assaulted a 19-year-old inmate in the back seat of a patrol car almost two years ago, having committed a felony by allegedly striking the inmate several times with his fist on July 22, 2011, according to prosecutors. His arrest followed an investigation by the detectives with the Sheriff’s Internal Criminal Investigations Branch. “Defendant Matthew Funicello pleaded no contest on Oct. 28 to one misdemeanor count of assault by a public officer,” District Attorney spokeswoman Shiara Dávila-Morales said Tuesday. “The defendant was sentenced to jail as a condition of probation one day and was given one day of credit time,” she said. “The defendant also was placed on summary probation for three years and was ordered to complete one year of counseling.” The inmate, according to a media release issued in April by the District Attorney’s office, was being transported from the sheriff’s Palmdale Station to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles when the alleged attack occurred.
